Sagmeister, a well-known graphic designer who has explored the theme of happiness extensively, points out that we have made significant progress in recent decades. There has been a reduction in poverty, hunger, and violence, and an increase in democratic nations worldwide. So why does it feel like the world is constantly in crisis? One key factor is the way news is disseminated today. In an era where headlines are designed to grab attention (Clickbait), negative news is favored because it generates more engagement and spreads faster. Studies have shown that negative news elicits stronger emotional reactions, leading to it being shared more frequently. Additionally, the frequency and volume of information we consume have skyrocketed thanks to social media. This constant exposure to negative events can distort our perception of reality, making it seem like the world is in a perpetual state of crisis. At the same time, social media often presents an overly positive portrayal of people’s lives—what could be called a „polished plastic life“—which is usually staged and far from realistic. This contrast between the grim news and the seemingly perfect lives on social media can amplify the feeling that something is amiss in our own lives, or that the world is spiraling into chaos, even when it is not. In summary: The disconnect between the actual progress in the world and the feeling that things are getting worse can be attributed to how we consume information and how news is presented. Negative news dominates, and the pervasive portrayal of „perfect lives“ on social media only exacerbates this perception
